Rethinking container logistics

Freight containers are of central importance in the international handling of goods by air, water, road and rail. State-of-the-art container terminals in ports, intermodal rail container terminals and air freight hubs are the lifelines of industry and trade as high-tech transshipment points. However, this requires large logistics areas. Container storage and retrieval operations are also time-consuming and costly and no longer meet the challenges of a networked, increasingly fast-paced global economy.

Vollert's container logistics concept offers a new solution approach here. We have been the expert for heavy-duty logistics solutions in the steel, metal, automotive and air freight industries since the 1980s. We bring this know-how into play here. And we do so with an intelligent software architecture that reliably and safely controls all transport and loading processes in container handling with state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 control technology.

Fully automated container handling

Container handling will continue to grow in an increasingly globalised and digitalised era. However, container terminals are often already reaching their capacity limits due to the space available.

Investments in expansion are only possible to a limited extent, and environmental regulations are becoming increasingly stringent, which makes adaptation to the internationally required throughput volumes of customers both lengthy and cost-intensive.

Space-saving container storage management

For central container storage management, our solution relies on a fully automated multi-level high-bay racking system. Compact stacker cranes ensure fast and economical storage and retrieval of the containers weighing up to 40 tonnes in the individually accessible storage bins.

State-of-the-art positioning and safety technology prevents container damage and at the same time ensures a high level of safety for people and materials. Apart from that the freight containers are particularly protected against lateral vibrations due to the cross-line placement into stock.

The advantages at a glance

For container handling, reach stackers, telescopic stackers and portal cranes have been the primary means of transport to date. The 10', 20' or 40' containers are stacked directly on top of each other vertically, which requires an immense amount of space, long transport routes and numerous restacking operations.

Economical handling of goods in a small space

Vollert's container logistics concept ensures economical cargo handling, and that in the smallest possible space.

Besides the increase in storage capacity with significantly shorter throughput times, this concept also offers several advantages:

  • Reduction of the required logistics areas by up to 70%
  • Avoidance of unproductive stock transfer processes
  • Light and weather-protected storage and retrieval of freight containers for loading and unloading operations, customs clearance, etc.
  • Reduction of noise and dirt emissions
  • Modular design of the entire system (stacker cranes, rack system, etc.) for maximum flexibility
